African Businesses Entering the Norwegian Market
As trade and investment links between Norway and African countries grow, an increasing number of African businesses are establishing a Norwegian presence — whether to serve Norwegian and Nordic customers directly, to access the European Economic Area, or to support existing trading relationships with Norwegian partners.
Establishing a legal entity
Most foreign businesses entering Norway choose to establish a Norwegian limited liability company (aksjeselskap, or AS), which requires registration with the Norwegian Register of Business Enterprises, a registered Norwegian business address, and compliance with Norwegian company law on share capital, governance and reporting. A foreign company may also register a Norwegian branch (NUF) of an existing foreign entity, which can be a faster route in some cases, though it carries different liability implications since the branch is not a separate legal person from its foreign parent.
Immigration and work authorisation
Individuals relocating to Norway to establish or run a business will generally need an appropriate residence permit, and the correct category depends on the specific circumstances — self-employment, an intra-company transfer, or a skilled-worker route, among others. This process should be planned in parallel with the company registration, since immigration timelines can be a limiting factor on when the business can practically begin operating with the founder present in Norway.
Contracts, employment relationships and any dispute that may arise will generally be governed by Norwegian law once the entity is Norwegian-registered, unless the parties validly agree otherwise in a given contract. Norwegian contract and employment law differs in material respects from many African legal systems, particularly regarding termination protections and collective bargaining structures, and should not be assumed to mirror home-jurisdiction practice.
A structured legal review before entry — covering entity choice, immigration category, tax registration and core contract terms — considerably reduces the risk of early operational setbacks.
